Klaus Theodor Wanner was born in 1954 in Schrobenhausen (Bavaria). He studied chemistry at the Technical Universtiy in Munich from 1973 to 1978. In 1983, he obtained his PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry under the supervision of Prof. F. Eiden at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Subject: Synthesis of pyrane anellated heterocycles with tetrahydro-3-pyranone). While working on his PhD, he studied pharmacy at the LMU. After qualifying as a pharmacist, he worked in a post doctoral position in the research group of Prof. A. I. Meyers at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, for the academic year 1984/85. He completed his Habilitation (professorial thesis) on the Asymmetric Synthesis of bioactive compounds in 1988. In 1990, he became C3-Professor (associate professor) for Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin. He was appointed to a full professorship (C4) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 1994. In 1988, Professor Klaus Wanner was awarded the Carl-Mannich-Scholarship of the DPhG (German Pharmaceutical Society). He was vice-dean of the Pharmacy Department at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1993-94. He was deputy executive commissioner (1994-1996), executive commissioner (1996-1998), vice dean (1998-2000) and from 2000-2001 dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the LMU. From 1999 to 2000 he was also a member of the permanent committee for budgetary matters, room allocation and buildings. From October 2008 - 2010, he was head of the Department of Pharmacy.
