How the degree program is organized

The Faculty for Chemistry and Pharmacy und the Faculty for Biology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich offer an advanced program of study which grants, upon successful completion, the degree of Master of Science. Admission to these programs requires a bachelor of science in either chemistry and biochemistry, biology and biochemistry or biochemistry. The Master of Science in biochemistry and the diplom in biochemistry are equivalent.

Students in the master's program acquire advanced specialized knowledge in their field which enables them to conduct independent research in the field of biochemistry and related applications and embark on multidisciplinary careers.

Students can enter the master's program in biochemistry in either the summer or the winter semester. The standard length of study is four semesters during which 120 credits must be earned. Courses are held predominantly in English. The program consists of:

  • courses (53 credit points) in two major fields (from among biochemistry and cell biology or chemistry) and one minor field.
  • the oral part of the master's exam (37 credit points)
  • the master's thesis (30 credit points)
