The application process
Prerequisites for acceptance into the master's program in chemistry are: a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemistry and biochemistry, biology and biochemistry or a closely related field in natural science with a cumulative grade of "good" (2,5) or better. Applicants with a grade of more than 2,5 are required to participate in a qualifying interview or placement exam. Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren. All other applicants will receive a letter of rejection listing the reasons for rejection. (cf. Prüfungsordnung )
Before you begin your studies in a particular program, you first have to apply for acceptance to that course of study, that is, you have to register or re-register. If you want to study chemistry or biochemistry at the LMU, you must complete two steps:
- Apply for acceptance, or so-called qualification, at the Faculty for Chemistry and Pharmacy of the LMU.
- Matriculate (register) at the Registrar's Office.
Steps one and two explained
1. Step one: application for admission
This part of the application process takes place at the Faculty for Chemistry
and Pharmacy at the Department for Chemistry.
When you have received a letter of acceptance from the Department, you can proceed
to step two.
- For new students entering the first semester of the program or transfer
students:
You can apply to the master's program in chemistry for either the winter or summer semester. The application deadlines coincide with the respective registration deadlines. - For foreign students:
Citizens of foreign countries who did not receive their university entrance qualification (Abitur) in Germany or at a German school outside of Germany must also apply for admission at the Office of International Affairs (Referat für Internationale Angelegenheiten) and submit to them an application for admission (Antrag auf Zulassung) , German-language proficiency test results, officially notarized documents, etc. ( More Infos here. )
This applies to both new students entering the first semester of the program and transfer students.- For admission to the winter semester, the deadline is July 15.
- For admission to the summer semester, the deadline is January 15.
When you have received a letter of acceptance from the Referat für Internationale Angelegenheiten and a letter of acceptance from the Department of Chemistry, you can proceed to step two.
Please read carefully this guide: Application-Guidelines-Master-Programs.pdf (28 kByte)
When applying for admission, the following documents must be submitted:
- A résumé
- Proof of qualification for university entrance (Abitur or equivalent)
- Notarized copies of all diplomas (graduation certificates) from all schools and universities attended (your bachelor's diploma, for example)
Students who have a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biochemistry from the LMU need only to register at the Examination Office (Prüfungssekretariat), see below.

2. Step two: matriculation at the LMU
General information:
When you have received a letter of acceptance from the Department of Chemistry
(and, for foreign students, a letter of acceptance from the Referat für
Internationale Angelegenheiten), you can matriculate (register) at the LMU.
After you have filled out the online matriculation form here:
LMU-Website, , you must come to matriculate in person. Filling out the online form
does not complete the matriculation process!
- For German citizens and students with a German Abitur:
Matriculation, or registration, takes place twice a year at the Registrar's Office (Studentenkanzlei). Please note the deadlines here!
To register in person, you need to submit the following documents:
the completed online registration form, your university entrance qualification document, your passport or identity card, your health-insurance identification, and the letter of acceptance from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
