The program’s design and its components

The bachelor program "Chemistry and Biochemistry" is divided into four components: inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry, and should be completed in six semesters. The program should acquaint the student with the theory and practice of experimental methods, impart a thorough knowledge of the subject and train the student's power of observation and develop his or her technical skills, all of which are requirements for independent scientific work.

The bachelor program in chemistry and biochemistry always begins in the winter semester and consists of two parts:

• During the first four semesters of the Basic Study program, the fundamentals of inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry as well as biology, mathematics and physics are covered. Lectures and lab courses, which familiarize students with basic experimental techniques and methods and the most important substances, are coordinated as far as possible.
  
• The Orientation Program, in the following two semesters, gives students the opportunity to concentrate in the field of chemistry or biochemistry by allowing them to choose from a large number of required and elective courses. In addition to inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry, students are required to choose from among the following courses: genetics, microbiology, physiology, structure biology and cell biology. The following courses are elective: bioinformatics, solid-state physics, immunology, informatics, crystallography, macromolecular chemistry, materials sciences, neurobiology, patent law, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmacology and toxicology, phytochemistry, theoretical chemistry and theoretical physics. Other elective courses which are deemed suitable by the Examinations Committee may also be chosen. Modern experimental techniques and analytical methods are covered in labs and courses for advanced students. The bachelor program is completed with the submission of a bachelor's thesis in one of the four main subjects. A diploma with the title Bachelor of Science is issued after successful completion of the program.
